What to laugh about

We all know that Katrina wreaked havoc in the south-east coast. I watched this from India with nothing more than mild attachment. After all, it was another natural calamity among the countless others. On seeing news about her sibling, Ophelia, my reaction was similar. It was a guffaw and a condescending laugh. The reason for this may be difficult to justify, but the closest I can get to it is, is that it is some remnant of the old syndrome. It doesn't concern us, so why bother. Serves the stupid folks here right! Imagine such a reaction to the Tsunami nine months ago. To this, I was participating in and fuelling the general sense of panic associated with my landing in Chennai.

Sometimes, mature human beings like me like to revel in the fact that we are mature people. It is a shame that the story is not quite that. The backlash can be very disgusting when it hits.

hmm.. the past few comments you have posted suggest that you are wallowing about in a very high comfort zone. It is one thing to spend all your acquainting time amidst just the kind of people you know, albeit the iitians you talk about, and start forming opinions, something many of our "esteemed" lot are guilty of.(sg would have given you a stinging repartee on that one). However, it will be a pity if you don't make an effort to learn a little of the culture and the people here. If you get mature enough, maybe you will get to the point where you won't consider judging whats-between-the-ears; maybe you will realize that it doesn't even matter? Nevertheless, spend some more time with your eyes and ears open and you will begin to see the various shades of grey.
